We welcomed our new full time cohort yesterday as well as our year 2 returners. Today we welcome our new 1st years. It made me realise (again) how much we take for granted in terms of implicit knowledge and the use of exclusive language. Each year I have to go back to explaining everything long-hand, as it were, until the trainees acquire the language of education. This happens gradually over the duration of the programme and it’s not noticeable in its development, it just ‘happens’ as they become involved in their new knowledge and career.
It’s interesting how our language use changes over time and depending on who we are with, including the ebb and flow of terminology.
